Welcome!
Whether you’re an artist, an art lover, or landed here by chance—welcome! And thank you for taking the time to explore my work.
“Ella’s greatest accomplishment as a contemporary artist is found in her strength of genre revolving around avant-garde performance art and tantalizing theatrical ambiance. Sometimes unsettling, always intriguing, her art really makes you think.”
(Elena Greco, Fine Artist, Buffalo, New York)
About
I’m Ella, a visual and theatre performance artist. Since I was a little girl I wanted to be an artist—only my parents had a different plan for me. But as the story goes, where there’s a will there’s a way…
ScenoArt
ScenoArt is the signature of my artistic practice, a term that loosely translates to “the art of writing in space.” It is also the name of my studio and gallery—a 700 sq. ft. space within my home, opened in 2007.
“Most summers, […], performance artist Ella Joseph opens her Linwood Avenue home and studio to curious visitors. Her dreamlike installations, capable of charming and disturbing an audience in equal measure and always somehow concerned with human vulnerability, have helped her forge an under-the-radar reputation as one of the city’s most intriguing emerging artists.”
(Colin Dabkowski, Buffalo News, May 2012, Buffalo, New York)
Concepts
Three main concepts underlie my work:
-
Theatre of Truth(s) — the content of my work: human vulnerability, inner narratives, and the emotional truths we veil and unveil.
-
When One Form Generates Another — the creative process: each artwork evolving from a previous form, transforming across mediums.
-
The Eternal Return — the arc of my artistic journey: circling back to painting, where it all began.
